How should I prepare? This question is hard to answer because it depends on how you’ve lived your life up to this moment. If you are a competitive athlete at the collegiate level or recently out of college as an athlete and have maintained a high level of training, then you are ready. If you are 35+ and have only run and done traditional weight lifting (like most), then you will want to join either a CrossFit Gym or start our online coaching and do that for a few months prior to trying the Kokoro camp.
You are ready for Kokoro Camp if:
- You are already seriously conditioned as a competitive athlete or have been CrossFitting or SEAL Fitting for six months and can meet the Basic Screening Test minimums.
- You attended the 1 week academy and subsequently train at a CrossFit gym, or with our online coaching or do SEALFIT on your own for up to six months, and you can pass the Basic Screening Test.
- You attended an Immersion Camp (SEALFIT Academy) and you have no choice because the Kokoro Camp is your graduation exercise!
What is the Basic Screening Test? To qualify for the Kokoro Camp you must either complete the 1 week Academy or pass the Basic Screening Test:
- Max rep push-ups in 2 minutes: 60 minimum
- Max rep Squats in 2 minutes: 60 minimum
- Max pull-ups in 2 minutes: 10 minimum
- 3-mile timed run in 26:00 or less
Is there a recommended reading list? Yes, Coach Divine’s Reading List
Below is an email exchange with a very competent 40 something Kokoro challenger who left the camp after 6 hours. This is provided so you have a better understanding of what Kokoro Camp is, and is not. Our trainees, unless elite athletes already, take considerable time to train for this accomplishment. Gentlemen- thanks very much for checking in with me. All is fine on this end. Coach Mark- I’m sorry I didn’t get to check with you before my departure. Let me share a few thoughts on how things developed for me. First and foremost- I have nothing but positive things to say about each of you, Sealfit, and US Crossfit. What you do is unique, and your whole organization is highly professional. Looking back on my decision to attend Kokoro- it was a consequence of doing the Operator WODS a few times, being able to manage the work effectively, and finding them to be a valuable training experience. For some reason that I’m not really clear on I believed that Kokoro would be more of the same. For the hours that I was there on Friday I did not find the physical demands to be unmanageable at all…. I hadn’t been able to run much in prep because of Plantar fascitis, but I’ve never been much of a runner anyway. What I was not prepared for on Friday, and what eventually led to my decision to cut it short was:
- I did not like the constant haranguing and verbal abuse- especially towards some of the weaker team members. I understand that that is part of the selection process in hell week and BUDS, but I did not consider it anywhere near enough in my decision to attend. I’ve always had a bad habit of getting involved in other peoples’ business. Almost all the fights I got in until adulthood were as a result of getting involved when some other kid was being bullied. I know that these guys at Kokoro were all willing participants and they weren’t being bullied but it made me feel quite uncomfortable nonetheless.
- I was already having a problem with the lack of sleep and inconsistent fueling, I’m an old guy who can hang with most of the young guys for up to several hours but then i need to go eat and sleep
- I was having a problem with the idea of making things difficult just to make them difficult. I’m not sure this makes sense, but one of the things I’ve always loved about training and competition is trying to “crack the code” by making difficult tasks easy and more efficient. Wearing boots, a ruck full of sand, and wet cammies while trying to run seemed designed to make the easy very diffficult.
- A final decisive factor was, after cramping in both quads and my right calf I really started to be concerned about what the impact would be on my training after Kokoro. The possibility that I would hurt myself at Kokoro to the point where it would interfere with my crossfit training block starting this week became real to me, and that was unacceptable. I am first and foremost, a crossfitter focusing on competition, My priorities are definitely different than others that were there.
In the final analysis gentlemen, I didn’t want it bad enough. I wasn’t willing to look past the things that I didn’t like and take a chance that I might end up missing a bit of training.
I take complete and total responsibility for my failure to appreciate what the experience would be like. Kokoro was designed to meet a certain need- and I’d say, from what I saw, that it does that admirably well. However, I now know, it meets a need that I don’t particularly have, and it was the wrong place for me to be.
Sorry for the long missive, but I feel I owe you both as complete an explanation as I can provide. I would like to continue to be part of the US Crossfit/ Sealfit family.
Best Regards, Jim
Hi Jim,
Thanks for the honest and cogent analysis of your training experience at Kokoro camp. I understand completely your decision, and though I believe you would have enjoyed the entirety of the experience ex-post facto, your reasons for attending were not adequate to stay the course, as you pointed out. I don’t think we led to any of the mis-understanding of the purpose and methods of the camp, but if we did I apologize.
The experience you describe as what you thought you were getting into is, essentially, our Academy. The 1 week and 3 week Academies are like a sports academy – with only a few sessions designed to take you out of your mental comfort zone similar to Kokoro.
The Kokoro camp is all about discomfort – the least being the physical discomfort and physical failure. Sleep deprivation is another aspect, and this sucks for anyone. The most challenging part is the mental and emotional discomfort. The perceived harassing is carefully designed to take your so far out of your comfort zone that your normal tools just do not work. However, for every intense “in your face” experience there is an equally powerful insight and supportive word provided, both individually and as a class.
The training is designed to create a “nothing can faze me now or ever” feeling – no chaos, no crisis, no emotional trauma, loss or anything. This is why the SEALs are so effective and mission focused. The methods are proven, though they can be intense and somewhat harsh if you are not ready for it.
To a person the graduates express a profound change in how they see themselves, a huge sense of accomplishment and a deepening of awareness and connection to the concept of the team.
At any rate everyone experiences SEALFIT in a different manner and Kokoro is not for everyone, nor is it a required “graduation” experience.
Therefore – I look forward to seeing you out here for some more sports training and mental toughness development!
Best,
Mark Divine

“I am sitting at my desk working on some reports, but all I can think about is the amazing weekend that just took place. WOW! That was truly (in your words) EPIC… I thought your lectures on Yoga, the Warrior Spirit and Leadership were outstanding.”
- Greg Amundson, CrossFit HQ and Amundson CrossFit, Kokoro Camp 12
“Those 48 hours were perhaps some of the most grueling, yet rewarding I have ever encountered in my life. As a marathon runner and a competitive athlete everything now seems like a cake walk in comparison… I now feel I have the confidence to get through BUD/s, and with the experiences I faced in camp I can take it with me to Coronado and use it so I can help not only myself but my teammates.”
- Trey Fischer, Kokoro Camp 9
“You’ve created an amazing life experience and I’m honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to live it. I draw on the experience every day in so many aspects of my life — in my thinking and reflection, relationships, training, teaching and coaching, pro-action/action/reaction, business, etc. While I’ve completed some relatively sizable endurance events in the past… none of those experiences comes even close the holistic takeaway from Kokoro Camp. Not even close.”
- Jeff, Kokoro Camp 13
