Anyone can quit. it is the easiest thing to do. but nothing in this life worth having comes easy. Victory is achieved through sacrifice.

I have to pass a PFT to become an agent with a prominent federal law enforcement agency. The events include- max sit-ups in 1 minute, 300m sprint, max push-ups (untimed), and a 1.5 mile run. Here’s my problem- I can put up good numbers in all the events…except the 300m sprint. I’m a tall guy and not a very strong runner. This has never stopped me from excelling at numerous athletic events during my life, but I have NEVER hit a mental wall like I have with this sprint. A competitive time for the event is under 50 seconds. If that doesn’t sound very hard to you, try it sometime. If you’re not a seasoned runner, it is unbelievably hard. I know that I have the capability to complete this event in a respectable time, but every time I toe the starting line on the track, I feel like a virgin on prom night. I get incredibly nervous, my mind begins to tell me how much this is going to suck, and I usually end up getting a poor time because I hold back while sprinting because of my irrational fear. I practice the event often, but the outcome has not improved much.

Is there anyone who has experienced a similar mental block with a PFT event like this? The one thing that pisses me off the most is that prior to this, I considered myself mentally tough. I was a two-sport athlete in college and am no stranger to pain or pushing physical limits, but this setback has caused me to completely question what I am made of. I am at my wit’s end and could really use some advice. Thanks in advance!

I have never suffered an injury before tearing my meniscus on patrol in Afghanistan 3 mos ago. I am training back up for SFAS in September but have concerns about how hard to push and what to push through. I have no frame of reference in this matter.

The medics will be there at all times and know what to look for. Go 100% the best you can. Do your physical therapy, strengthen your knees slowly. Form more than ever is important to you. You will be in pain there, there is no other way. You have to take it in stride best you can. I know guys that broke ankles etc during sfas and completed the course by just continuing to push forward.

This will be my second time going so I have a leg up on what to expect to some degree. I appreciate the input I am mainly concerned with train up to not over work. It doesn’t feel like this injury should be much of a hinderance, especially after today’s work out.
